One of Canva\u2019s new AI features<\/a> has been caught replacing the word \u201cPalestine\u201d in designs. The Magic Layers feature \u2014 which is designed to break flat images out into separate editable components \u2014 isn\u2019t supposed to make visible alterations to user designs, but it was found by X user @ros_ie9<\/a> to automatically switch the phrase \u201ccats for Palestine\u201d to \u201ccats for Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The issue was seemingly limited specifically to the word \u201cPalestine,\u201d as @ros_ie9 noted that related words like \u201cGaza\u201d were unaffected by the feature. Canva says it has now resolved the issue and is taking steps to prevent it from happening again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe became aware of an issue with our Magic Layers feature and moved quickly to investigate and fix it,\u201d Canva spokesperson Louisa Green told The Verge<\/em>. \u201cWe take reports like this very seriously, and we\u2019re putting additional checks in place to help prevent this in future. We\u2019re sorry for any distress this may have caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Replies to the now-viral X post suggest that other users<\/a> were able to replicate the bug<\/a> before Canva fixed it, though my own tests didn\u2019t show any words \u2014 Palestine or otherwise \u2014 being altered by the feature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Still, this is one heck of a blunder, especially for a platform that\u2019s increasingly trying to compete against Adobe\u2019s suite of AI-powered design tools.
