And 51% of adults say they have listened to an audiobook at least once, according to the Audio Publishers Association\u2019s 2025 consumer survey.<\/p>\n<p>But traditionalists insist that reading requires eyes on a page. More than 40% of Americans believe listening to an audiobook is less rigorous and doesn\u2019t truly count as reading, a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/07\/nx-s1-5454723\/does-listening-to-an-audiobook-count-as-reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NPR-Ipsos poll found.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others, however, argue the suggestion that audiobooks &#8220;don\u2019t count&#8221; is about enjoying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/genres\/books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the art of storytelling,<\/a> and audiobooks allow that,&#8221; said Ali Smith, a Maryland-based dog trainer and avid audiobook listener.<\/p>\n<p>While she wishes she had time to sit and read an actual book, audiobooks better suit her busy life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Telling me that&#8217;s not reading as I listen to stories about dragons, fairies, knights and gnolls is just not true,&#8221; which processes print, is not as engaged when you listen,&#8221; cognitive neuroscientist Nadine Gaab of Harvard Graduate School of Education in Massachusetts recently told <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2026\/03\/audiobooks-dont-really-count-as-reading-think-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Harvard Gazette.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it has been shown that when some people listen to words, they visualize them, so the letter box gets activated.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both listening and reading can activate the brain\u2019s main language comprehension systems, agreed Emily Levy, a literacy expert and founder of EBL Coaching, which serves New York and New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/travel\/washing-underwear-coffee-maker-slammed-disgusting-influencer-faces-backlash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WASHING UNDERWEAR IN HOTEL COFFEE MAKER SLAMMED AS &#8216;DISGUSTING&#8217;
