After immigration agents detained Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil<\/a> over his involvement in pro-Palestine protests on campus, President Donald Trump promised it was just the beginning<\/a>. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has since arrested at least two more students who are in the country on visas \u2014 one of whom had recently sued the Trump administration on First Amendment grounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n DHS agents arrested Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, outside his home in Virginia on Monday. According to a habeas corpus<\/em> petition filed by Suri\u2019s attorney, Suri was arrested on the same grounds as Khalil: the secretary of state deemed him a threat to the US\u2019s foreign policy interests. In the petition, which was obtained and first reported on by Politico<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>Suri\u2019s attorneys say he has \u201clong been doxxed and smeared\u201d by far-right groups. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n The petition also claims that Suri is being targeted because of his wife\u2019s Palestinian heritage. Suri\u2019s wife, Mapheze Saleh, is a US citizen. In February, the official X account of Israel\u2019s US embassy called out Saleh, claiming<\/a> she was the \u201cdaughter of a Hamas senior adviser\u201d and calling her presence at Georgetown an \u201cactive threat to Israeli and Jewish students.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On Thursday, a federal judge in Virginia barred DHS from deporting Suri for now. Like Khalil, Suri is being held at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Louisiana, the Times <\/em>reports. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n DHS did not respond to The Verge<\/em>\u2019s request for comment. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told<\/a> the New York Times<\/em> that Suri was \u201cspreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media\u201d but provided no further evidence. She also said that Suri has \u201cclose connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior adviser to Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Suri\u2019s lawyer, Hassan Ahmad, denied McLaughlin\u2019s claims, telling the Times <\/em>that his client had been targeted \u201cseemingly based on who his father-in-law was.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n According to the Times<\/em>, Saleh\u2019s father, Ahmed Yousef, was formerly an adviser to a Hamas leader but left his position over a decade ago and has publicly criticized Hamas\u2019s October 7th attack on Israel. Yousef told the Times<\/em> that Suri is not involved in any \u201cpolitical activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Momodou Taal, a Cornell University student also reportedly targeted by DHS, was involved in political activism. In fact, Taal had recently sued the Trump administration<\/a>, alleging<\/a> that he fears \u201cgovernment retaliation\u201d for engaging in \u201cconstitutionally protected expression critical of US foreign policy and supportive of Palestinian human rights.\u201d Taal, who is from the United Kingdom, had previously expressed fears<\/a> that the university\u2019s decision to suspend him and other activists would lead to his student visa being suspended. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
