It can be taken at any time of day without meal restrictions \u2014 unlike the Wegovy pill, which must be taken on an empty stomach each morning.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8cb7ca\" class=\"body-graf\">The lowest dose is expected to cost about $149 a month for people paying out of pocket, in line with the Wegovy pill. Higher doses could cost as much as $349 a month. It\u2019s unclear how many private insurers will cover the drug. Under a Trump administration plan, Medicare could begin covering the drug <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/trump-weight-loss-drugs-cost-wegovy-zepbound-novo-nordisk-eli-lilly-rcna242309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for some patients<\/a> as soon as this summer, with copays as low as $50 a month. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-baf0ec\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s a breakthrough in that it\u2019s a simple oral medication,\u201d Eli Lilly CEO Dave Ricks said in an interview. \u201cYou just put it in that pill case in the morning, and it fits into your daily routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a6ac27\" class=\"body-graf\">The approval comes as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/weight-loss-drug-prices-2026-glp-1-pills-trumprx-what-expect-rcna249520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GLP-1 market continues to expand<\/a>, with newer options offering more weight loss, different forms or lower prices. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-49698e\" class=\"body-graf\">Lilly also has another GLP-1 drug in development, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/experimental-drug-offer-weight-loss-drug-now-market-study-finds-rcna89702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called retatrutide<\/a>, which has shown greater weight loss in trials than any other drug on the market.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2b6e8b\" class=\"body-graf\">But the pill versions tend to lead to less weight loss than the weekly injections \u2014 a gap that could make them less appealing to patients.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-caa0c4\" class=\"body-graf\">Phase 3 clinical trial data found that Foundayo helped people lose <a href=\"https:\/\/lilly.gcs-web.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/lillys-oral-glp-1-orforglipron-demonstrated-meaningful-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12.4% of their weight, on average,<\/a> at its highest dose after 72 weeks \u2014 similar to the Wegovy pill but less than injectable versions of Wegovy and Zepbound. Those aren\u2019t direct comparisons because the drugs weren\u2019t compared in a head-to-head clinical trial.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e36034\" class=\"body-graf\">Maggie Linton, 77, was part of the clinical trial for Foundayo through MedStar Health in Maryland. She didn\u2019t know for sure if she was on the active drug or a placebo, but she lost nearly 60 pounds. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bd2ccb\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt made a big difference almost immediately,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a1ce28\" class=\"body-graf\">Linton also saw improvements in her blood pressure and cholesterol. Once the trial ended, she gained 10 pounds back but was able to keep off most of the weight loss by being active. Other than constipation, she didn\u2019t experience any side effects. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii styles_portrait__NEQhG\" id=\"anchor-6b7a5c\"><picture class=\"styles_image__i32F7\" data-testid=\"picture\" data-flavor=\"fit\" data-original-height=\"2048\" data-original-width=\"1638\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2026-04\/260401-maggie-linton-ew-554p-6717e5.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2026-04\/260401-maggie-linton-ew-554p-6717e5.jpg 1x\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2026-04\/260401-maggie-linton-ew-554p-6717e5.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2026-04\/260401-maggie-linton-ew-554p-6717e5.jpg 1x\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2026-04\/260401-maggie-linton-ew-554p-6717e5.jpg\" alt=\"Maggie Linton.\" height=\"2048\" width=\"1638\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">Maggie Linton.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Courtesy Maggie Linton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-9287b5\" class=\"body-graf\">Now that the drug is approved, she wants to talk to her doctor about going back on it. \u201cI\u2019m still about 20 pounds from where I want to be.\u201c<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c0940d\" class=\"body-graf\">Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrinologist and obesity expert at Harvard Medical School, said many of her patients who have switched from injections to the Wegovy pill have complained they don\u2019t lose that much weight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0fe783\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe jury is still out in terms of what people are really going to achieve with these pills,\u201d said Dushay, who isn\u2019t affiliated with Lilly or Novo Nordisk. \u201cI mean, 12% is weak compared to what you\u2019re going to see with Wegovy and Zepbound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-65fd1a\" class=\"body-graf\">Ricks acknowledged that Zepbound is more effective but said pills still have a place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3dddcc\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPeople report being very successful on Zepbound and then wanting to transition to something, you know, something less invasive than a weekly injection, where you have to transport it under refrigerated conditions and remember to take it once a week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-918c2b\" class=\"body-graf\">Demand for weight loss pills is strong, if Novo Nordisk\u2019s sales are any indication. In February, Novo Nordisk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/170000-people-us-are-taking-wegovy-pill-novo-nordisk-says-rcna257395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said more than 170,000 people<\/a> were taking the Wegovy pill after it launched in January. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-18f9d0\" class=\"body-graf\">Dushay said the pills may be a good option for people looking to maintain weight loss after using injectable versions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3ff731\" class=\"body-graf\">They may also benefit patients who are prone to injection site reactions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d87d71\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPeople really do have difficulty with injections,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-118d51\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Lilly said the side effects of Foundayo were similar to its injectable drugs, with gastrointestinal issues \u2014 such as nausea, constipation and diarrhea \u2014 among those most commonly reported. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/foundayo-weight-loss-pill-fda-approves-eli-lilly-glp-1-cost-rcna265907\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved a new weight loss pill from drugmaker Eli Lilly.
