Horror lovers, look no further, a new film<\/a> adaptation based on the “best book<\/a> of the year” is coming to our screens from Monday.<\/p>\n

The Housemaid<\/a> is a 2025 American psychological thriller<\/a> film co-produced and directed by Paul Feig, based on the 2022 titular novel by Freida McFadden. The film stars Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins.<\/p>\n

McFadden’s 2022 novel was crowned the #1 bestselling and most-read fiction book of the year (2025) on Amazon UK<\/a> for Kindle readers, just in time for the film’s release.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The film’s plot states: “THE HOUSEMAID is a wildly entertaining thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, based on the best-selling book. From director Paul Feig, the film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”<\/p>\n

The Housemaid has so far been receiving positive reviews from critics, who also praised Feig’s direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Seyfried), as well as the film’s plot twists and sense of fun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has so far amassed a solid 78% rating, with the critics’ consensus stating: “A sly throwback to the lurid thrillers that used to dominate multiplexes, The Housemaid cleans up nicely thanks to its wicked sense of fun and a delightfully unnerving performance from Amanda Seyfried.”<\/p>\n

One fan left a glowing review, they said: “IMO was probably the best book-to-movie adaptation that I’ve seen, minus the ending. The actors\/casting were excellent! I get that the ending in the book may not have played well on screen, so I don’t mind the change. My husband did not read the book and thoroughly enjoyed the movie, so that’s a win in my eyes.”<\/p>\n

“Great movie! Kept me entertained the entire time. There were several changes from the novel, but they made the movie even more intense. I would see it again, which is the highest compliment I can give a movie,” a second said.<\/p>\n

The Housemaid is out in UK cinemas from Monday, December 22.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
