Slow Horses star Gary Oldman says he wants to play lead \u00adcharacter Jackson Lamb for \u201cthe long run\u201d \u2013 so he\u2019ll be spooked to hear writer Mick Herron is planning to kill him off. The Oscar-winning actor, 67, has made it clear that he will happily play the flatulent, \u00addishevelled spymaster in the \u00adfictional Slough House for as long as they want him.<\/p>\n

But Mr Herron, the programming chair for this year\u2019s Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, supported by the Daily Express, revealed he recently made a big decision about Lamb\u2019s future. During a panel event with Slow Horses screenwriter Will Smith on Saturday, Mr Herron admitted: \u201cThis is just between you and me, but I do know how, why, when and where Lamb dies.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comment drew gasps from the audience, prompting Mr Smith \u2013 previously a writer for BBC<\/a> sitcom, The Thick of It \u2013 to say: \u201cYou have never told me that before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Herron replied: \u201cI have never told \u00adanybody. It\u2019s quite a recent development\u2026 I have realised certain things about the series, how it will go.\u201d Mr Herron, 62, had been responding to a question from Mr Smith, who asked: \u201cDo you have an end point for Lamb, because it feels like he could go on forever?\u201d<\/p>\n

After Mr Herron\u2019s bombshell response, the screenwriter, 54, probed: \u201cBut you don\u2019t have a date?\u201d To which the author cryptically replied: \u201cDo I not?\u201d This clearly shocked Mr Smith, who added: \u201cI have my private list of characters I think you won\u2019t touch and you have just blown it!”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Actress Saskia Reeves, 63, who plays Lamb\u2019s trusted office \u00admanager Catherine Standish in the Apple TV show, also made a surprise \u2013 appearance at the event at the Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Other special guests over the weekend included US author Attica Locke, Lee and Andrew Child, Kate Atkinson, Val McDermid and broadcaster Steph McGovern.<\/p>\n

Mr Herron\u2019s latest Slow Horses book, Clown Town, will be published in September.<\/p>\n

And with the fifth series of Slow Horses set to premiere in September, and seasons six and seven already commissioned, fans of the show need not panic that the end is nigh for the much-loved main character. But all will be revealed in time\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
