Medicare is a governmental program which provides
\nmedical insurance coverage for retired persons over
\nage 65 or for others who meet certain medical
\nconditions, such as having a disability.<\/p>\n
Medicare was signed into legislation in 1965 as an
\namendment to the Social Security program and is
\nadministered by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid
\nServices (CMS) under the Department of Human Services.<\/p>\n
Medicare provides medical insurance coverage for over
\n43 million Americans, many of whom would have no
\nmedical insurance. While not perfect, the Medicare
\nprogram offers these millions of people relatively low
\ncost basic insurance, but not much in the way of
\npreventative care. For instance, Medicare does not pay
\nfor an annual physical, vision care or dental care.<\/p>\n
Medicare is paid for through payroll tax deductions
\n(FICA) equal to 2.9% of wages; the employee pays half
\nand the employer pays half.<\/p>\n
There are four “parts” to Medicare: Part A is hospital
\ncoverage, Part B is medical insurance, Part C is
\nsupplemental coverage and Part D is prescription
\ninsurance. Parts C and D are at an added cost and are
\nnot required. Neither Part A nor B pays 100% of
\nmedical costs; there is usually a premium, co-pay and
\na deductible. Some low-income people quality for
\nMedicaid, which assists in paying part of or all of
\nthe out-of-pocket costs.<\/p>\n
Because more people are retiring and become eligible
\nfor Medicare at a faster rate than people are paying
\ninto the system, it has been predicted that the system
\nwill run out of money by 2018. Health care costs have
\nrisen dramatically, which adds to the financial woes
\nof Medicare and the system has bee plagued by fraud
\nover the years.<\/p>\n
No one seems to have a viable solution to save this
